The Cary Theatre offers a Historic Look at the Best in Film, Comedy, and Much More

In the exact location that once hosted the town’s first ever indoor movie theatre, the historic Cary Theatre has been giving local residents a consistent stop for all genres of entertainment, with a few different services being offered at the location over the years as well, just minutes from your new home at the Triangle’s number one name in luxury new home living, Preston Retreat, for over 70 years.

Built in 1946, the Cary Theatre, or just simply “The Cary” as many have come to refer to it, initially was host to not only films but also live performances, much as it operates currently. However, during its existence which began in 1946, the building has also spent periods of time as a recording studio, and auto parts store, and a clothing shop, called “Cary Clothiers.”

Located at 122 East Chatham Street in the heart of downtown, the Cary Theatre was purchased in the Summer of 2011 by the town, when it underwent a 13-month renovation and expansion to the site. The drastic changes to the Cary Theatre were made in order for the finished facility to become the cultural facility that it has become. The multi-use and new, improved Cary Theatre opened its doors to the public following the renovation period in February of 2014 and has kept a focus on an array of areas including digital arts and film as well as youth and amateur theatre and music. The expansion of the Cary Theatre also included a three-story addition setting adjacent to the historic building to be used for community and commercial uses.

In the upcoming days, weeks and months, the Cary Theatre, as always will be playing host to a wide variety of talent and entertainment options including classic films, newer movies, live musical and comedy performances, and some of the most impressive stage shows you will find anywhere.
